Dr Amer Mitchelle

Interventional neuroradiologist and diagnostic radiologist, consulting at Prince of Wales and Liverpool Hospitals in Sydney.

Clinical practice

Dr Amer Mitchelle treats vascular conditions of the brain, head, neck and spine using endovascular techniques, in which the site of disease is reached through the arteries and veins under image guidance.

His practice centres on the treatment of cerebral aneurysms and carotid artery disease, alongside acute stroke intervention, arteriovenous malformations and fistulae, venous sinus stenting for idiopathic intracranial hypertension, the investigation of pulsatile tinnitus, and middle meningeal artery embolisation for chronic subdural haematoma. As a radiologist he also provides image-guided spine and joint pain procedures.

Training & experience

Dr Mitchelle completed his subspecialty interventional neuroradiology fellowship at Prince of Wales and Liverpool Hospitals, leading to certification by the Conjoint Committee for Recognition of Training in Interventional Neuroradiology (CCINR). Across his fellowship training he performed over 1,400 neurovascular procedures, including high volumes of aneurysm treatment, carotid and intracranial stenting, stroke thrombectomy and venous intervention.

He trained as a diagnostic radiologist through the Sydney Local Health District, is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (FRANZCR), and holds the European Diploma in Neurointervention. His path to medicine began in neuroscience, with honours research in neuroanatomy, and he later completed a Master of Public Health at the University of Sydney.

Research & teaching

Dr Mitchelle maintains an active research program in neurointervention and stroke imaging, with peer-reviewed publications spanning mechanical thrombectomy, CT perfusion and vascular neuroanatomy. He is an Associate Clinical Lecturer at the University of Sydney and contributes to the training of registrars and fellows.

Approach to care

Neurovascular care is shared between specialties, and Dr Mitchelle works closely with colleagues in neurology, neurosurgery, vascular surgery and stroke medicine. Treatment recommendations follow the published evidence and the circumstances of the individual patient, whether that leads to intervention, surgery or medical management. The resource pages on this site are written on the principle that patients and referrers are best served by clear, accurate information.
